Adriane Hofmeyr, President
Adriane Hofmeyr is a litigator, with a particular focus on challenging administrative (government) conduct and representing clients at administrative hearings. She has presented appeals to the Arizona Supreme Court, Arizona Court of Appeals, and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She is also a Professor of Practice at the James E. Rogers College of Law, where she has taught the class, “Practicalities of Suing the Government.” She is licensed in Arizona, California, Colorado, and South Africa. Originally from South Africa, Adriane practiced law there before the end of apartheid and after South Africa’s miraculous transformation to a fully fledged constitutional democracy (she served as in-house counsel at the Cape Town City Council at the time). This has given her an acute appreciation for the power of the legal system to prevent and overturn government abuses of power.

Robert Bartels
Bob Bartels is a Stanford Law School graduate who has been a professor at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University since 1982. He has litigated several hundred civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts in Michigan, California, Iowa, and Arizona. Since he returned to the College of Law in 1996, following a two-year stint as an Assistant United States Attorney, he has spent much of his time handling cases for the Arizona Justice Project. He has been a member of the ACLPI board of directors for many years.
Dr. Irene Márquez Biggs
Dr. Irene Márquez Biggs is a retired Pediatric Hospitalist interested in child advocacy, education, and community development. She is married to a physician – Christopher Biggs, MD, PhD, radiation oncologist. Irene joined the ACLPI board of directors in early 2017.

Rebecca is a litigator and founding member of the law firm Silver Cain where she handles high stakes business disputes. Rebecca attended Gonzaga University and the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.

Bryn K. DeFusco
Bryn K. DeFusco is a founding and managing attorney of DeFusco Law, P.L.C., representing accident victims, wrongful death survivors, crime victims, and victims of unreasonable conduct by insurance companies. Bryn was a trial attorney with the Office of Public Advocate for nine years before starting with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in 2012. In 2006, she was nominated for the Arizona Public Defender Association’s Rising Star Award and recognized by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors for her outstanding contributions to the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Teen Court Programs. Bryn sits on the Board of Directors of the New Life Center Domestic Violence Shelter and Sequoya Elementary Association of Parents and Teachers. Her past and present volunteer organizations include Treasure House, Girl Scouts, Parents of Murdered Children, Arizona Special Olympics, The Solel Preschool, and 4Mati Foundation.
James Dufresne
Originally from Scarborough, Maine, James has more than 15 years of experience in the financial services industry. James specializes in working with business owners and high-net-worth families who are looking to coordinate their investment, tax and estate planning to accomplish their personal and financial goals.
Outside of work, James and his wife, Jillian, have three children and enjoy various youth sports and volunteer activities in the greater Phoenix area.
Paula Durham
Paula Durham is a Director in the Strategic Advisory practice at J.S. Held, where she focuses on providing litigation support, forensic accounting, receivership, and bankruptcy services to clients involved in commercial disputes and/or experiencing financial distress. She has decades of experience in fraud and forensic accounting, having been engaged in numerous complex engagements including multiple fraud investigations, FCPA investigations, and other complex investigations.
Paula’s expertise extends to quantifying economic damages where she has extensive experience advising on lost profits and damage calculations for numerous litigation and arbitration matters across various industries.
Paula has a robust background in receiverships, having served as Receiver or Receivership Manager for numerous matters in both state and federal courts. Paula has been engaged in matters involving a variety of industries, including construction, restaurants, mining, oil and gas, agriculture, manufacturing, defense contracting, and cannabis.
Paula’s experience in the cannabis industry is notable, having served as the Director of Operations and Compliance for a vertically integrated cannabis enterprise. She regularly assists various cannabis clients with financial and compliance investigations, lost profit and damage analyses, and M&A due diligence. Paula combines her industry knowledge with extensive expertise in receivership assignments, fraud investigations, and compliance engagements, making her a valuable asset in complex matters for clients in varying stages of distress.
Paula holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from Arizona State University, earned in 1995. Her project geographical experience spans the United States, Africa, and the Middle East.
Stanley G. Feldman
Stanley G. Feldman is of counsel to the firm of Miller, Pitt, Feldman & McAnally, P.C. His practice involves serious personal injury cases as well as insurance coverage and bad-faith litigation. He also serves as a mediator and arbitrator in cases involving diverse areas of the law. Stanley served on the Arizona Supreme Court from January 1982 through December 2002, including a five-year term as Chief Justice (1992-1996), and authored hundreds of opinions dealing with all aspects of law. In addition to the ACLPI board, Stanley is on the board of the Arizona Association for Justice (formerly Arizona Trial Lawyers Association) and United Policyholders.
Stacy Gabriel
Stacy, a graduate of NYU Law School, has been practicing employment law since 1993. Her practice is devoted to counseling both employers and employees on a wide variety of employment law issues and representing her clients in employment-related claims in court and before state and federal administrative agencies. In addition to acting as a lawyer advocate and advisor to her clients, Stacy’s practice consists of performing “neutral” work as a third-party HR investigator and independent personnel hearing officer for government entities.

Andy Gaona is an attorney with Coppersmith Brockelman. He is a commercial litigator and election lawyer and maintains an active pro bono practice. Andy joined the ACLPI board in 2014.

Joel is a partner with Perkins Coie and has practiced in the areas of appellate and complex commercial litigation since joining the firm in 1987. Joel has served as chair of Perkins Coie’s national Appellate Practice Group and has briefed and argued appeals throughout the federal appellate system and in Arizona appellate courts. Before joining Perkins Coie, Joel was a member of the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice and a trial attorney in the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. Joel attended Georgetown University Law Center and served as a law clerk in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit for the Hon. R. Lanier Anderson, III.

Bruce is a partner with Papetti Samuels Weiss where he handles disputes involving trade secrets, trademarks, unfair competition, and other business litigation. Bruce graduated from Occidental College and NYU School of Law, where he served as editor-in-chief of The Review of Law and Social Change. He interned with ACLPI as a law student in 1993 and has been a member of ACLPI’s board for 16 years.

Lee is an attorney with Mitchell Stein Carey Chapman. He previously was an Assistant United States Attorney and Special Assistant Arizona Attorney General. Lee is a past president of the ACLPI board.
Geoffrey Sturr
Geoffrey Sturr is a member of Osborn Maledon, P.A. in Phoenix. His practice primarily involves commercial litigation, professional liability defense, and internal corporate and governmental investigations. A graduate of Haverford College and the UCLA School of Law, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Cynthia Holcomb Hall, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, before entering private practice.
